Directory And Booklet Publishing
Specialized information, or booklet publishing, has always been of growing demand, and with our newly improving technical advantages, (evolving daily) we have easy access to great information at our fingertips. But both offline and online books, or (e-books) as they are often called or referred to, are two different types of offerings. And both command a readership base dependant on an Individuals preference.
If you can come up with an idea, or better yet, several ideas for a specialty book, you may have the potential or groundwork for starting a small publishing business. Better yet you will probably be able to do it all from home. How to manuals, fix it books, hobby periodicals etc. are all marketed every day both online and off. There is only one thing standing in your way as a writer / publisher of booklets, directories or periodicals… and that would be the customer base in which you need to acquire.
It is rare for directories to remain current much longer than it typically takes to get them printed. So providing annual or possibly bi-annual updates may be the answer for an additional fee or subscription. How to manuals can often turn into a series, often based on offshoots or similar topics of interest for your reader. You can see a select pattern with many popular how to books such as cookbooks. Each booklet may specialize in different types of niche recipes, entrées or deserts. This is why booklet publishing can be a very effective marketing tool. Once you have established a readership base, subsequent booklets can be printed and sold to the same audience.
Your first edition of booklet publishing will probably take the most time to write, compile and distribute. Initially coming up with a good topic of interest that is in high demand may be the biggest challenge. Once you have a good topic however, you can then come up with sub-topics for subsequent booklets and be rewarded with a continued sales base for years to follow. Hard work and determination in this business pays off, and as long as you have a popular well written niche booklet, money is to be made.
One alternative to writing your own booklet, especially if you feel it is beyond your talents or capabilities, is to work with a vanity writer. In this situation the writer pays you to publish his or her publication at their own risk. You may ask, what is the benefit for them? Big well-established publishing houses constantly turn down many writers, even though some of them have written good stuff. If you can find a good writer to take care of the content for a booklet, you can partner and take care of the publishing and printing. Keep in mind that there are many writers out there that can write, and want or need to see their manuscript or name in print. You may also be surprised at their availability, and the content they deliver.
To become involved in the booklet publishing business you should be computer literate and have some background in writing. This is not to say that it cannot be done working from home, by a total novice with a need to succeed. Some marketing skills and business sense, along with the ability to organize and recognize an opportunity is a definite asset. Along with your background, you will need a personal computer with publishing software, typical office equipment, and a printer who can produce and deliver quality work for you.
