Home Based Catering Business
A home-based catering business will allow you to work out of your own home, and therefore keep your overhead low and manageable. But you will have to create a working environment that you can call your own. A quiet corner of the family room, or even the garage for starters will do. Some people even use partitions for privacy and to keep their working area separate from family distractions among other things.
The first rule in setting up a home-based catering facility is to make do with covering the basics, such as your home office or workspace as covered above. Being frugal and not buying anything until you need it can make a dramatic difference to your bottom line. This is a common example. Some people who start a home business will go out and buy a $400.00 Fax machine, and install a dedicated line just for it. When they only receive a total of 5 faxes a month, does it really make sense?
There are local fax and office clubs that will receive your faxes for you, send them out, and charge you a small service fee fro doing so. If you want to keep your home-based catering business productive and efficient money wise, then you may want to fore-go the expensive route of ownership. You can spend all that saved money on direct mail, classified ads, or other ad campaigns to get your small business going in the right direction.
If you are only catering to a few parties each month, you will probably be able to make do without even a computer at your disposal. This is even further emphatic if you are only running your home-based catering business on a part-time basis. Some people still use the old school filing system of paper and a cabinet or desk in which to handle their paperwork. Sometimes having a good memory with names of clients serves well, but as your business grows you may need to store larger amounts of information to stay productive and competitive.
As a caterer, you may find that one of your biggest challenges will be to work within a set budget for each separate client. Clients usually come in one of two kinds of budget arenas, and that being cheap, and cheaper. It will help tremendously if you first learn to work within your own budget guidelines, keeping things simple and concentrating on the big picture. Imagination and resourcefulness are key elements to running your business, and being able to make it last.
