Genealogy has experienced a dramatic growth in popularity for probably the last two decades. Many people are now experiencing an interest in the background and roots of their family’s ancestors. A genealogist’s workload may consist of interviewing family members, elders, and visiting libraries, courthouses and cemeteries. They find information pertaining to ones family tree by looking at old diaries, marriage licences, newspapers and death certificates.

Although this can be a work from home job or small business opportunity, genealogists find employment within many different organizations. There are many libraries and historical societies set-up with special accommodations or rooms for their employed genealogists. Another way a genealogist can find work is by educating others in a classroom setting at their own home, or teaching adult night classes at a college. As most people in this field have no formal training themselves so to say, their training can be made possible through university history and science courses. And although no specific curriculum is made available in the field of family tree study, the Board for Certification of Genealogists makes clear the significance or importance for obtaining valid certification in this line of work.

One may wonder how to get started as a genealogist. Fortunately you can pursue it at your own pace, utilizing independent courses of study usually offered by various institutions in your area. Many local societies may sponsor one or two day events or seminars. This way you can decide if genealogy were a business or service you would enjoy before committing to serious study. A great way to get started that may seem obvious however, is to start with your own families tree and heritage.

The salary or wage for working as a genealogist will also probably vary in accordance to your experience and professionalism. Hourly rates can range anywhere from 10 to upwards of a hundred dollars an hour, plus other expenses such as travel and phone calls. But as this can be considered a home-based business, as long as you do not have to rent or lease an out of home office. Working out of your home or even apartment will arm you with a cost cutting advantage.

NOTE: If you become a highly specialized expert and gain much experience, you may be able to charge a higher rate for your services, especially when faced with a difficult or unusual tree.
